Polls open Tuesday afternoon for Primary voting
ALBANY -- Primary Election 2013 is underway and some of the most high-profiled races this fall could easily be settled in the Capital Region.
One of the top local races is the democratic primary for Albany mayor.
A new poll from YNN and Siena shows City Treasurer, Kathy Sheehan with a huge lead over former councilman, Corey Ellis.
Sheehan is expected to arrive at the Albany Pump Station to watch election poll returns. Sheehan will be joined by family, friends, supporters, and campaign volunteers at 9:30 p.m.
Given the party's enrollment edge, whoever wins Tuesday is virtually guaranteed to be the next mayor of Albany, replacing Jerry Jennings who decided against seeking a sixth term.
Another local race many are keeping a close eye on is the republican primary for Saratoga County Sheriff.
Jeff Gildersleeve and Michael Zurlo are vying for the nomination that will succeed current sheriff, Jim Bowden.
Bowden is not seeking re-election after more than four decades on the job.
Voters must be enrolled in a political party before casting a primary ballot. Polls open at noon and will remain open until 9 p.m.
