NY prepares to release 30K pheasants for hunters
ALBANY (AP) -- The fall pheasant hunting season opens soon and the Department of Environmental Conservation is getting ready to release about 30,000 adult birds on lands open to public hunting.
The season starts Oct. 1 in northern and eastern New York, Oct. 19 in central and western regions, and Nov. 1 on Long Island.
Junior hunters, 12 to 15 years old, get their own special weekend to hunt on the weekend before the regular season starts in each region. For northern and eastern areas, that's Sept. 28-29.
In addition to the newly released adults, more than 41,000 young pheasants were reared and released by volunteers around the state.
Information about hunting regions and pheasant release sites can be found on the DEC website.
