Cuomo: Sheriffs don't choose laws to enforce

ALBANY (AP) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo says law enforcement officials don't get to pick and choose which laws to enforce -- and that includes the sheriffs opposed to New York's new gun restrictions.

Talking to reporters Wednesday, Cuomo says law enforcement's job is to enforce all the laws, which are enacted by the Legislature.

He says that to do otherwise "would obviously be chaos" and "a dangerous and frightening precedent."

Cuomo's office drafted and pushed through the gun law in January that bans New York sales of some popular semi-automatic rifles and gives owners a year to register those they already owned.

The New York State Sheriffs' Association and five individual sheriffs have joined the court effort to block enforcement of new bullet limits for magazines and firearms restrictions.
