New Photo of Lincoln Discovered?
(WLOS) A UNC Asheville assistant professor finds a new image of President Abraham Lincoln in a picture at the Library of Congress.
Christopher Oakley obtained a rare stereo picture of Lincoln taken right before he delivered his Gettysburg Address. While studying new high-resolution copy, he spotted a face in the crowd that looked like Lincoln. He used computer imaging technology to check the shape of Lincoln's face, and became the first person to find a new picture of Lincoln in 61 years.
Several top Lincoln scholars agree with Oakley, and the picture has created a sensation among researchers and reporters. Oakleys find is published in the Smithsonian Magazine and USA Today.
Oakley is using the discovery to teach students animation and the possibilities of computer generated effects. The class is called The Virtual Lincoln Project and students are creating a 3D reconstruction of the Gettysburg Address.
