Kathy Sheehan wins Democratic Primary for Albany Mayor

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- City Treasurer Kathy Sheehan has defeated former councilman Corey Ellis in the Democratic mayoral primary for an open seat in Albany.

Sheehan, a former corporate lawyer who became treasurer in 2010, is hoping to become Albany's first female mayor.

She will face Republican candidate Jessie Calhoun in the Nov. 5 general election.

Ellis was making his second mayoral run.

Incumbent Mayor Jerry Jennings is leaving office after two decades in a city that has long been dominated by Democrats.

Sheehan grabbed a series of high-profile endorsements during the primary race, including Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and the state Public Employees Federation.
