The Bottom Line : Health Care and the BBB
NISKAYUNA -- On top of any confusion about the Affordable Care Act, as the October 1st start date for some parts of it inches closer, the number of complaints coming in about scammers trying to take advantage of it is creeping higher.
A follow-up to a Bottom Line Alert that CBS 6's Dori Marlin has been tracking for weeks now.
The Federal Trade Commission had already warned of related scams cropping up - and now the Better Business Bureau tells Dori, they've received "dozens" of complaints from people in Upstate New York.
The agency is also more specifically spelling out how these scams are working.
First, there's this one: The caller reportedly claims to be a Medicare employee - then demands money in order for you to proceed, and be eligible for healthcare coverage.
And, there's this one: Consumers being directed to websites or call centers, to sign up for what they're told is "discount" health insurance.
Dori asked the BBB, "Have you heard from anyone who unfortunately has fallen for one of these scams already?"
"We've gotten alot of these calls after the fact, and that's where the problem is," says BBB spokesperson, Peggy Penders. "Yes, several people have given away personal information to people that they do not know, and that's where the trouble is."
Officials warn that if you get one of the calls, just hang up. Don't call back, and don't press any buttons that the caller tells you to.
Also, don't rely on Caller ID since what shows up there might not be accurate.
And finally, as always, don't give out your personal information to someone you don't know.
