New York's Energy Star program reaches milestone

ALBANY (AP) -- New York state has reached an energy milestone.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority's Energy Star program has completed its 50,000th project.

A two-story, four-bedroom, Rochester-area home built in the 1940s has received some needed upgrades. The inside temperature of the house had varied, being cold in some areas and hot in others.

The family, which runs a day care program in the home, has lived there for six years and wanted lower energy bills. They opted for insulation, air sealing, a high-efficiency variable-speed furnace, a high-efficiency tankless water heater, and a programmable thermostat.

NYSERDA offers loans of as much as $13,000 per household -- or $25,000 if energy upgrades will pay for themselves in savings in 15 years or less.
