Residents remember Irene on eve of 2nd anniversary
SCHOHARIE -- Wednesday marks the two year anniversary of
Tropical Depression Irene hitting the Schoharie Valley. Schoharie Area Long
Term relief estimates 63 percent of those impacted are back in their homes.
I never expected us to be where we are and we knew in the early stages it was going to be tough and challenging and actually frightening to look ahead in many ways but as weve been through it and progress we have had so many people step up to help, said Sarah Goodrich, Executive Director of SALT.
Some residents like Ron Filmer still have the water line from the flood outside of their home.
[Its] just for myself. Itll be coming off shortly, said Filmer.
The 86-year-old has lived in his home with his wife for almost 50 years and lost nearly everything. It took almost five months of work by volunteers and contractors to get his home back to order.
Thats a hell of a time to go out and buy new furniture and new everything, said Filmer. [The volunteers] were just wonderful. They piled the stuff out there, took all the wiring out of there. Thats the first time we had water here, but after 50 years I guess we're pretty lucky.
