AP-NORC Poll: Parents back high-stakes testing

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A new poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research finds parents of school-age children view standardized tests as a useful way to track student progress and school quality.
Most parents say their own children are given the right number of standardized tests. A majority see the tests as a component of teacher evaluations, and most also say classroom observations should be an important part of teachers' evaluations. Three-quarters want districts to help teachers who fare poorly in such assessments. Few think teacher salaries should rest solely on test scores.
It also found most parents have heard little about Common Core State Standards, and a third have no idea if they live in a state using them.
The poll was conducted in June and July among 1,025 parents.
