Report shows NY lawmakers salaries, both public & private
ALBANY -- It's being called the biggest step in New York government transparency yet.
The states ethics board, JCOPE, released documents Wednesday showing what each and every state lawmaker makes, both publicly and privately. The filings show not only who lawmakers work for but what they are compensated. Th data is making a lot of good government groups excited.
Bill Mahoney of the New York Public Interest Research Group says the now public documents "are the biggest step we have seen in decades in terms of transparency."
"Many of them might be voting on or introducing bills that affect their own business interests," Mahoney said of lawmakers. "Some members might have an investments in say state agency bonds or other private companies and be introducing legislation that directly increases the stock price of these companies."
