NY man pleads guilty to stabbing trooper in Albany

ALBANY (AP) -- An 18-year-old man has admitted trying to kill a trooper patrolling downtown Albany's state government complex.

Albany County District Attorney P. David Soares says Eric Green of Brooklyn pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree attempted murder and first-degree robbery.

Authorities said Trooper Rodney Smith was working at the Empire State Plaza on March 3 when he was approached by Green, who said he was new in town and needed help. As Smith was checking his identity, Green stabbed him in the neck and ran off with Smith's radio after unsuccessfully trying to take his gun.

Smith was released from a hospital two days later.

Green is expected to be sentenced to 30 years in prison.
