Part of Thruway shut down after fatal accident
HERKIMER (AP) -- A fatal one-vehicle accident on the Thruway shut down an eastbound stretch of the highway in central New York and backed up traffic for miles.
State Trooper Jason Jones says he knew of one confirmed fatality from the accident in Herkimer at 1:12 p.m. Sunday. The spokesman did not have information on additional injuries. It was not immediately known how many people were in the vehicle.
The accident closed all eastbound lanes between Exit 34A at Chittenango and Exit 30 at Herkimer. Drivers are being told to expect long delays.
Eastbound traffic is being detoured south on Interstate-481 to eastbound Route 20, to northbound Interstate-88 and then back on the Thruway at Exit 25A. Thruway traffic was backed up for about three miles at one point.
Westbound lanes remain open.
