Ft. Plain residents face deadline in flood cleanup

FT. PLAIN -- Residents living in Ft. Plain only have two more days to get their debris to the curb if they want the village to haul it away for them.

A week after heavy rains and major flooding destroyed homes in the Village of Ft. Plain, homeowners are still cleaning up muddy messy debris. Streets throughout the village have piles of garbage stacked in front of homes.

Those piles now must sit until Monday, the next day the village will pick them up.

According to Mayor Guy Barton the village only has an agreement with the Montgomery-Otsego-Schoharie Solid Waste Management Authority until Wednesday of next week.

An original plan was to have the village cease debris pick up on Friday, however because of public angst two more days of pick up will take place.

To help residents the State of New York and National Guard have sent equipment and manpower, Mayor Barton said.
