NY woman faces sentencing in illegal maid case

ALBANY (AP) -- A hotelier's widow faces sentencing in federal court on her conviction for keeping an Indian woman in the country illegally.

Annie George was convicted in March of harboring an illegal immigrant at her massive stone mansion in rural Rexford, 15 miles northwest of Albany in Saratoga County. She was acquitted of treating the woman as a slave.

George faces a possible penalty of up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when she appears in Federal Court in Albany Tuesday morning. But prosecutors aren't seeking jail time.

Federal prosecutors have recommended eight months home detention, 200 hours community service, two years of probation and a $20,000 fine. Prosecutors are also seeking a ruling seizing the 20,000-square-foot mansion.
