Scientists to study increading number of sharks found off Cape Cod coast

FALMOUTH, Mass. -- Scientists are hoping to attach electronic tracking devices to as many as 20 great white sharks in the waters over the next month as they try to learn more about the feared creatures that have been turning up in increasing numbers off Cape Cod in recent years.

The Cape Cod Times reports that the research vessel OCEARCH departed Woods Hole on Tuesday.

Greg Skomal, a state scientist and great white researcher, said the goal is to find out as much as possible about the movement and behavior of the sharks.

A smaller boat will be used to actually catch the sharks. A hydraulic lift will then be used to life the sharks on to the deck of the research vessel, where scientists will affix the electronic tagging devices before releasing the sharks back into the water.
