Group: Conserve more Hudson Valley farms

POUGHKEEPSIE -- An environmental group says that of the 5,387 farms in the Hudson Valley region, only 11 percent have been conserved.

Scenic Hudson released a report Tuesday that identified 815 farms in valley as the "highest priority" for conservation to ensure that New York City and the surrounding region continue to have nearby supplies of fresh food.

The group estimates it would cost $720 million to conserve the 163,673 acres identified as particularly important to preserve.

Among other things, Scenic Hudson calls forincreased investment from foundations and other philanthropic groups.
