State worker charged with abuse at group home
ALBANY -- A second state employee in two months has been arrested on charges of abusing a resident at a northern New York group home.
New York Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott says 51-year-old John Boyer of Tupper Lake was charged Wednesday with endangering the welfare of an incompetent person and official misconduct for verbally abusing a resident at a Tupper Lake residence for people with developmental disabilities.
The group home is operated by the state Office for People with Developmental Disabilities.
Boyer is accused of berating a resident over their behavior.
He pleaded not guilty Tupper Lake town court. His lawyer, Brian Barrett, says Thursday that Boyer has worked 26 years for the agency without incident and described the prosecution as harassment.
Another staffer pleaded guilty to official misconduct and resigned in April after being accused of hitting a resident in the face.
