Shen class of 2013 remembers victims of crash
SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Gina Zappone dreamt of the day she would walk the stage in her cap and gown, but she never thought her cousin Deanna wouldn't be by her side. That's the harsh reality Shenendhowa's class of 2013 had to face Friday.
"We were the same age obviously so since we grew up together we were best friends, we did everything the same," Gina says.
"It's definitely bitter sweet that i get to move on and I'm proud of all my friends for getting to move on with the rest of their life but she should be too it's hard," she adds.
This class has had it's fair share of tragedy but today triumph as over 700 graduating seniors accepted their diplomas. The community is still healing from Decembers horrific crash on the Northway, that took the lives of two seniors.
While Chris Stewart and Deanna Rivers were not at the commencement, a chair was set in their honor. Many grieving students like Gina displayed buttons of their fellow classmates
"She would def be very excited about today, this is something that we both definitely looked forward to for awhile wearing the gold gold cords for NHS was something we were really excited to get into the club for," Gina tells us.
The families of Chris Stewart and Deanna Rivers accepted a diploma in place of their son and daughter whose lives were taken far too soon. A bittersweet reminder that a rough year has come to an end, and the lives of Stewart and Rivers have not been forgotten.
"I'm dissapointed that they can't be here because i think they'd love it. they were great kids they were always there for everyone," fellow classmate Anthony McGibbons had to say.
