Portrait of Gov. Mario Cuomo on display in Capitol

ALBANY (AP) -- Former Gov. Mario Cuomo's portrait is being hung in New York's Capitol, where he was a top national political figure for over a decade.
The Democrat was governor from 1983 to 1994.
Cuomo's portrait is being hung Saturday in the Hall of Governors on his 81st birthday by his son, Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Mario Cuomo is credited with delivering some of America's most important political speeches. They included the speech on abortion at Notre Dame University and the 1984 Democratic National Convention.
The convention speech struck liberal tones unpopular in most of the country at the time.  But Cuomo took aim at Republican President Ronald Reagan.
Cuomo said people "are in despair" in the place you don't see and in the places you don't visit.
