What You Need to Know to Protect Yourself From the Sun
NISKAYUNA -- Protecting your skin is serious business. It is important that even children use precautions before going out in the sun.
Local aesthetician, Sara Paulsen says it is important to select the right sunscreens and moisturizers for yourself and your kids. For babies up to six-months old Paulsen recommends not using a sunscreen. She says your baby could be allergic, so it is more important to use clothes as coverage while in the sun.
"People don't realize that incidental exposure to the sun can add up. Running errands, getting in and out of your car, especially between the hours of ten and four, so it is very good to keep your skin protected because that incidental exposure can add up over time," Paulsen tells CBS6.
Many products can be deceiving. Paulsen tells us you want to make sure you are picking products that have UVA and UVB broad spectrum protection. Also, if you are going to be swimming or sweating, make sure you are purchasing water or sweat resistant products, not water or sweat proof. Finally, if you are using a water or sweat resistant product, make sure you reapply at least every two hours.
"It's also important to keep an eye out for things, changes in your skin, dark spots, skin tone," adds Paulsen.
Experts say it is important to pay attention to the SPF numbers because that tells you how well a product protects you from sunburn. According to USA Today SPFs of at least 30 to 50 are generally a safe margin to choose from.
