Police: 4 kids, 3 adults killed in tractor trailer crash

UPDATE:

Coroner: NY crash victims include 4 kids, 3 adults

TRUXTON (AP) -- Authorities say the seven people killed in upstate New York when their minivan was hit by a trailer include four young children and three adults in their early 20s.

Cortland County Coroner Whitney Meeker tells The Associated Press Thursday morning that all seven victims, including four children under 10, were local residents.

They were killed and a man was injured when their van was hit by a trailer that broke away from a truck on Route 13 around 6 p.m. Wednesday in the rural town of Truxton, about 25 miles south of Syracuse.

Meeker says the children were from two different families, including one from Truxton.

Authorities haven't released the victims' names.

Officials say the trailer was loaded with crushed cars when it disconnected and slammed into the van.

TRUXTON, N.Y. (AP) -- Seven people were killed when a tractor-trailer collided with a minivan on a rural two-lane highway in upstate New York.

Police say the rig was headed south around 6 p.m. on Route 13 about 25 miles south of Syracuse when the trailer became disconnected and crossed the center line, hitting a minivan carrying eight people.

The force of the impact ripped the minivan apart, and both vehicles came to rest on the shoulder of the roadway.

Officials have not released the identities of those killed. One person in the minivan was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse for treatment. Two people in the truck were not injured.

Officials did not say what caused the accident. Thunderstorms and heavy showers were reported in the area at the time.
