Dem NY assemblywoman calls for Silver to resign

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- A Democratic assemblywoman has called for Speaker Sheldon Silver to resign his leadership position over a secret settlement using public money to end sexual harassment claims against a member.

Assemblywoman Inez Barron accuses Silver of "egregious behavior" in crafting a $103,000 settlement using public money to secretly end the initial accusations against Assemblyman Vito Lopez.

Barron says Wednesday that Silver violated Assembly rules by not handling the accusation through established channels.

Earlier this month, the state ethics board accused Lopez of civil violations of the public officer's law, but found no crime or ethical violations by Silver.

A Silver spokesman discounted Barron's opposition, noting she opposed Silver in the past.

Assembly Republicans also want Silver investigated for possible fraud and to reimburse the state for the settlement.
