Bennington Battle Monument open

BENNINGTON, Vt. -- The Bennington Battle Monument -- Vermont's tallest
structure -- opens for the season this weekend.
The 306-foot-tall monument opens Saturday.
The state-owned historic site opened in 1891 to commemorate the Revolutionary
War Battle of Bennington that took place in 1777 in nearby Walloomsac, N.Y.
A force of soldiers from the Army of British Gen. John Burgoyne was headed
to Bennington to seize a store of arms and ammunition.
The stone obelisk was built on the site of the storehouse.
The Rutland Herald reports that this season's events include
the annual Climb of Your Life on May 18, sponsored by the American Lung
Association, and the readings of the Declaration of Independence on July 4 and July 13.
Bennington Battle Day will be celebrated on Aug. 17 and 18.
