NYS Comptroller halts $21.2 million in tax refunds
ALBANY -- New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says his office has stopped $21.2 million in questionable tax refunds.
DiNapoli reports that his office uncovered 6,353 improper filings so far this year.
The majority of questionable refunds stemmed from taxpayers claiming credits for ineligible child care or claimed credits only for low-income households.
Auditors found that 27% of those dubious refunds were linked to dishonest tax preparers filing false tax returns.
