Seneca Tribe deal means tax revenue, sites for future casinos

Among the potential sites for a full-fledged casino is Saratoga Springs. Mayor Scott Johnson says if capital region casino were to be located somewhere else, it would hurt the city. He says New York State should also want to place one in his city.

"New York State for example, has been receiving revenue from our racino operation - VLT operations since 2004," says Johnson. "It's very successful, it's a brand, a model, if you will, so it works."

Todd Simkus, President of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce also wants a casino in the city but also in Queens, where the Genting group runs gaming at Aqueduct. Under the casino bill proposed by Governor Andrew Cuomo, Genting would be prevented from applying for a license to offer table games such as blackjack and craps. Shimkus says that could hurt thoroughbred racing.

"If Genting is not approved as one of the casino locations," says Shimkus, "then the funding that's coming to NYRA for purses, capital improvements and for breeding could go away, and we want to makes sure that money continues to flow into that industry."

The Saratoga Racecourse generates about $200 million in the capital region each year.
