Improvements planned for Hoosick St in Troy
TROY -- Major pedestrian improvements are planned for seven
intersections along Hoosick Street. Now when pedestrians cross, cars will not
be allowed to turn right on red.
Engineers from the Department of Transportation adjusted the traffic light cycle to allow pedestrians 38 seconds to cross. Additional speed limit signage and new crosswalk pavement will be installed in the next few months.
The DOT also ordered “elevator-style” buttons that will illuminate once activated by a pedestrian looking to cross the street.
Troy is planning an education campaign for drivers and pedestrians, which will teach drivers the new rules and encourage pedestrians to cross only when allowed. Mayor Lou Rosamilia says jaywalking violations will be enforced.
A more comprehensive study of Hoosick Street is planned for the next few years. The DOT will consider a proposal to build a pedestrian bridge as it looks to make the street more pedestrian-friendly.
