Identity of man shot after attacking cop with knife released

SCHENECTADY - The man who stabbed another man and attempted to stab a Schenectady Police officer has been identified.

Schenectady Police say 40-year-old Julio Colon was killed after Sgt. Darryl Mallard shot him three times in the chest.

Mallard, who has been with the department since 2003, had to force his way into 3290 Balltown Road around 9 a.m. after responding to calls about a fight between two men.

When he kicked in the door, Colon was holding a knife to another man's chest who he had already stabbed once.

Mallard ordered Colon to drop his weapon but Colon stabbed the victim again. Mallard fired one shot, hitting Colon in the chest.

Colon then turned on Mallard and lunged at him with the knife, so Mallard opened fire again, hitting him twice in the chest.

Colon was rushed to the hospital but later died from his injuries. The stabbing victim injuries were non-life threatening. Sgt. Mallard was not injured but was taken to the hospital for observation.

The investigation is still ongoing.
