Los Angeles, CA - Tri-City ValleyCats first baseman A.J. Reed was named the 2014 winner of the Golden Spikes Award, which is given annually to the nation's top amateur baseball player.
At the University of Kentucky this past spring, Reed was a dual threat. He led the NCAA in home runs as a designated hitter, while also leading the SEC in wins as a lefthanded starting pitcher.
The Houston Astros took the Terre Haute, Indiana native in the 2nd round of the MLB Draft and made Reed a fulltime first baseman. He will rejoin the ValleyCats for Saturday night's home game against State College.
