Oakland Drafts Cogswell in 7th Round

Updated: Saturday, June 7 2014, 12:01 AM EDT
Charlottesville, VA - While preparing for Saturday's NCAA Super Regional opener, Ballston Lake's Branden Cogswell (Shenendehowa) learned that the Oakland Athletics had selected him in the 7th round of Friday's MLB Draft.

Cogswell is a junior at the University of Virginia, where he has twice been named All-ACC after having gone undrafted out of high school.

He is one of a record-tying four Section II products taken in the first 10 rounds of this year's draft, matching a feat done just once before.

Jeff Hoffman (Shaker/ECU) was drafted 9th overall Thursday by the Blue Jays.  Brian O'Keefe (Colonie/Saint Joseph's) was taken in the 7th round Friday by the Cardinals.  And Matt Gage (Broadalbin-Perth/Siena) went to the San Francisco Giants in the 10th round.

Cogswell, Hoffman, and O'Keefe were teammates on the 2011 South Troy Dodgers team that reached the Connie Mack World Series, just weeks after each had gone undrafted out of high school.Oakland Drafts Cogswell in 7th Round
