National Weather Service Non Precipitation Advisory Definitions


Frost Advisory
Issued by local National Weather Service Forecast offices for individual counties when widespread frost is expected during the growing seasoon. Generally when low temperatures of 32° to 36° are forecast during the growing season a frost advisory is issued.

Freeze Warning
Issued by local National Weather Service Forecast offices for individual counties when temperatures of 32° or below are expected over an wide area for a significant period of time (several hours) during the growing season.

Wind Chill Advisory
Issued by local National Weather Service Forecast offices when potentially dangerous wind chill readings are EXPECTED. For the local region a wind chill advisory is issued for Berkshire, Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Litchfield and Ulster counties when the wind chill is expected to range from 15 to 25 degrees below zero. A wind chill advisory is issued for Albany, Bennington, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schoharie, Schenectady, Washington, and Warren counties when the wind chill is expected to range from 20 to 29 degrees below zero.

Wind Chill Warning
Issued by local National Weather Service Forecast offices when life threatening wind chill conditions are EXPECTED. For the local region a wind chill warning is issued for Berkshire, Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Litchfield and Ulster counties when the wind chill is expected to range from 25 degrees below zero or lower. A wind chill warning is issued for Albany, Bennington, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schoharie, Schenectady, Washington, and Warren counties when the wind chill is expected to range from 30 degrees below zero or lower.

Heat Advisory
Issued by local National Weather Service Forecast offices for individual counties when the heat index (a combination of humidity and temperature) is expected to range between 100 to 104 degrees for two or more hours.

Dense Fog Advisory
Issued by local National Weather Service Forecast offices for individual counties for the occurrence of widespread fog which reduces visibility to 1/4 mile or less.
