National Weather Service Wind Alert Definitions


High Wind Watch
Issued by local National Weather Service Forecast offices when sustained wind speeds of 40 mph or greater lasting for one hour or longer or for winds of 58 mph or greater for any duration are POSSIBLE over a large regional area. High wind watches are typically issued up to twenty four hours in advance of a potential high wind event to alert you to the possibility of widespread damaging winds.

High Wind Warning
Issued by local National Weather Service Forecast offices when sustained wind speeds of 40 mph or greater lasting for one hour or longer or for winds of 58 mph or greater for any duration are EXPECTED over a large regional area . Widespread power outages are likely during high wind warning events due to trees and limbs falling onto utility lines and poles.

High Wind Advisory
Issued by local National Weather Service Forecast offices when sustained wind speeds of 31 to 39 mph lasting for one hour or longer or for winds of 46 to 57 mph for any duration are expected. Wind advisory events generally result in downed trees and limbs with numerous to widespread power outages.
