Flooding could include urban and poor drainage flooding due to heavy rain, river and stream flooding due to heavy rain or ice jams or flooding due to a dam failure. |
Flash Flood Warning
Issued by local National Weather Service Forecast offices for individual counties when rapidly occurring flooding will create an immediate threat to life and/or property. Flash flooding generally occurs in a time period of less than 6 hours. |
River Flood Warning
Issued by local National Weather Service Forecast offices when flooding is expected to occur on main stem rivers. River flooding is generally slow to occur with the high water in many cases occurring some time after the heavy rain from a storm ends. An exception to this is when ice jams in the winter form which can create rapid flooding of rivers. River flood warnings can remain in effect for extended periods of time. |
