Albany-area students in NYC for outdoor youth summit
NEW YORK CITY -- A group of 26 high school students are delegates at the first Outdoor Youth Summit and Festival in New York City’s Central Park this weekend.
They’ll be joining more than 500 students from across the country.
Planned activities are both recreational and educational -- including kayaking, mountain biking, film screenings, discussions and speeches covering a wide range of issues.
Among the Capital Region students attending the summit are 12 from the Green Tech High Charter School, five from Albany High School, four girl scouts, three members of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Albany, and two members of Albany’s Union Baptist Church.
The trip is being organized by the Green Tech High Charter School, which incorporates environmental awareness into its curriculum.
Brother Yusuf Burgess, who sits on the board of the Children and Nature Network and serves as the school’s family intervention specialist, is spearheading the organizational effort.
“Since early 2008 students from Albany’s Green Tech High Charter School have campaigned to create a nature-based initiative to inspire, engage, and prepare themselves and other youth throughout the city,” Burgess said in a release. “This experience is an excellent opportunity to build on and enrich that effort.”
