Village of Athens issues boil water advisory after e. coli found
Comments 0 | Recommend 0The village of Athens has issued a boil water advisory after fecal coliform bacteria, or e. coli bacteria, were found in the water supply Thursday.
"Fecal coliform or e. coli are bacteria whose presence indicates that the water may be contaminated with human or animal wastes," according to the release from the village. "Microbes in these wastes can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches or other symptoms."
The bacteria pose a special health risk for infants, young children, some of the elderly and people with severly compromised immune systems.
The village's State Water System said they're investigating a suspected failure in the chlorination system. Bacterial contamination can occur when increased run-off enters the drinking water source -- following heavy rains, for example -- or through a break in the distribution system or a failure in the water treatment process.
The problem is expected to be resolved within 48 hours, according to the village.
In the meantime, residents are asked to boil water before drinking it. "Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for a minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water.
"Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice.
"Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. The water may be safely used for laundry and bathing, if precautions are taken not to swallow any water."
