A Saratoga Springs man pleaded guilty on Tuesday to charges he broke into the Niskayuna home of his children's mother last August, stabbing her in the abdomen and back as she pleaded for him to stop, the Schenectady County District Attorney's Office said in a press release.

Adam Lewis, 48, was carrying matches and a can of gasoline when he broke in, District Attorney Robert Carney said in a press release. Six children -- including three of his own -- were inside the house at the time.

Lewis pleaded guilty to all 19 counts of the indictment, including a first degree charge of attempted murder, Carney said. As a result, Lewis will receive 12-15 years in prison when he is sentenced on July 24.

"We are pleased that the defendant spared his victim from having to testify, but by pleading guilty to the entire indictment we can now only hope that Judge [Richard C.] Giardino imposes a sentence which truly recognizes the severity of the victim's injuries, the unspeakable nature of his plan to harm all the people at that location, and the seriousness of the offenses he admitted," Carney said in the press release.

"The victim does plan to attend the sentencing and tell the Judge about her ordeal, and the power of her words should be convincing," he said.

Assistant District Attorney Christina Tremante declined to identify the victim, but said that she has recovered from her injuries. She said all six children in the home that night, three of which the victim was babysitting, were under the age of 13.

Several of the counts against Lewis stem from other incidents dating back to August 2007.
