Out of the Darkness Walk to fund suicide prevention programs
Comments 0 | Recommend 0The Saratoga Springs Out of the Darkness Community Walk will take place this Sunday, Sept. 20.
The walk benefits the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, so proceeds will fund local and national research, education and support programs.
The walk will begin at the Saratoga Flat Track on Union Ave with walker registration at 8:30. Participants will walk three miles through Congress Park.
There will be about 175 Out of the Darkness Community Walks this fall throughout the nation, and more than 45,000 walkers are expected to turn out this year. Last year, 156 walks drew 36,000 walkers who raised $3.4 million for suicide prevention.
One million Americans attempt suicide yearly, and 33,000 commit suicide yearly, making suicide the third-leading cause of death among teens and young adults. Additionally, more than 20 million Americans suffer from depression.
