CRIMETRACKER: Attempted Robbery-Caught on Tape
Comments 0 | Recommend 0"I didn't ask him to come in here and rob me. He gets what he gets", says Store Clerk, Larry Defreest.
It took less than ten minutes for two store clerks at the FoodMart on Southern Boulevard in Albany, to teach a would-be robber the lesson of a lifetime; nothing in life is free.
"I'm not giving out money. It's not my money to give", says DeFreest.
The confrontation plays out on store surveillance video: 19 year old Khamen Monger supposedly walks into the store and tries to buy cigarettes. Just then he slips DeFreest a note that reads, "This is a robbery." Unaffected, DeFreest alerted his boss to the incident, who was also behind the counter, and told the teen to leave. Things got ugly when the teen allegedly walked around the counter, and approach the clerk as if to take him down. DeFreest fought back by grabbing the teen and placing him between himself and this boss. At one point, his boss managed to get away to call police while DeFreest was left with the teen. The teen attempted to break free by biting DeFreest's right arm.
"(My arm) skin was in his mouth(your skin was in his mouth?) He was yanking it like it was a candy bar or something."
The teen also pulled out a 12 inch kitchen knife and tried to stab the owner. The owner stopped him by grabbing his hand.
Larry and the crook battled for close to 8 minutes, all but tearing up the front end of the store. And while you might think this situation would have both the owner and the store clerk a little shaken up, DeFreest says the only thing that got to him was watching the tape and seeing his boss's three year old son in the video, witnessing the entire incident unfold.
"That knife could have flown off and stabbed the kid.so whatever he gets--he gets."
