NY Legislature set to release new district lines

New York's Republican-led Senate and the Assembly's Democratic majority this week are expected to release the new election districts they propose for use over the next 10 years.

Good-government groups are wary the majorities will use the process to create districts loaded with their party's voters to strengthen their hold on power.

Each majority refused to create an independent redistricting commission to draw the lines. Senate Republicans and Assembly Democrats pledged to do so during the 2010 elections.

Newsday reports the Senate will create a 63rd seat in the Albany area for Republican Sen. George Amedore.

The Daily News reports the Senate GOP will also redraw a Queens district based in Flushing that would be the first district in the Legislature dominated by Asian voters.
