Man dies after exposure to hazmat in Schenectady
Comments 0 | Recommend 0UPDATED 4:03 p.m., August 28
One man has died after he was exposed to hazardous material near an industrial plant in Schenectady Tuesday.
He was one of two workers taken to Ellis Hospital after being exposed to hydrogen sulfide, a byproduct of waste water. The workers were reportedly trying to repair a sewage vacuum when one of the men was overcome by the fumes.
The second worker attempted to help, but was also overcome by the fumes.
It wasn't clear which of the workers had died. The other man is said to be in good condition.
A decontamination area had been set up at the hospital for the men to be treated during the hazmat situation Tuesday; nine firefighters and EMS workers were scrubbed down in the parking lot.
