Leaders vow to reopen site of Binghamton massacre
Civic leaders in Binghamton vow to reopen the immigrant center where a gunman killed 13 people before taking his own life.
The American Civic Association is closed now, still adorned by piles of flowers left in memory of the victims. The cleanup is finished and the building is ready to reopen but officials want to take into account the psychological effect of the shootings.
Police say Jiverly Wong went on a homicidal rampage through the center Friday, opening fire on a class of immigrants taking an English class.
SUNY officials said today several members of its own community were affected: two research scholars at nearby SUNY Binghamton and the mother a recent SUNY graduate were among those killed. Another visiting scholar and the spouse of a grad student were injured.
There were also SUNY Binghamton students living in the building next to the American Civic Association -- one of whom is from Slingerlands in Albany County. [VIDEO: Neighbor Speaks]
"[T]he SUNY community from across New York have the staff, faculty and students, and their families, in our thoughts and we stand ready to help the people of Binghamton University and the Binghamton community in any way we can," read a statement from SUNY officials.
Governor Paterson also ordered that flags on state government buildings be flown at half-staff Wednesday, April 8th in honor of the victims.
