Albany Med awards $500K medical prize to genetic researchers
ALBANY -- The richest U.S. prize in medicine and biomedical research is going to three American scientists who contributed to the mapping of the human genetic blueprint -- an advance that gives the medical world a better understanding of human disease.
The $500,000 Albany Medical Center Prize was shared Wednesday by Dr. David Botstein of Princeton University, Dr. Francis Collins of the National Institutes of Health, and Dr. Eric Steven Lander of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.
It's the largest medicine or science award in the United States.
All three participated in the Human Genome Project, which led to new research into better diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.
