Arrest made in Oct. 13 Troy shooting

Police arrested a Troy man in connection with the Oct. 13 shooting death of Jimmy Chapman at Harrison St. and Second St. - and the accused is the nephew of Schenectady Police Chief Mark Chaires, according to police sources and others familiar with the Chaires family.

Tyrone Chaires, 23, was arrested Thursday night at the station and arraigned in Troy Police Court on Friday, according to a statement released by police on Friday night.

Chaires is behind bars at Rensselaer County Jail. Police said he is charged with second degree murder and first degree criminal use of a firearm.

Mayor Harry Tutunjian released a statement about the arrest on Friday night after the announcement by police.

"The Troy Police Dept. worked tirelessly to pursue every lead and had the help of a community on alert and proactive about their neighborhood's safety," Tutunjian said. "To that end, this is a story that starts with a tragedy but ends with a criminal apprehension and a community who's able to sleep a little better tonight knowing another violent crinimal is off our city's streets."
