Police arrest three in animal shelter break-in, cans and bottles theft
Menands Police announced today they've arrested three men in connection with the theft of over $600 worth of bottles and cans from the Mohawk Hudson River Humane Society in January.
The animal shelter in the village of Menands had amassed a collection of empty bottles and cans to be redeemed for the cost of caring for the animals housed at the shelter.
Those bottles and cans were stolen on four separate occasions in the month of January, police said.
The following men were arrested in the case:
- Parish Leitos, 21, of Lake Katrine, N.Y.
- Colin Schlegel, 19, of Saugerties, N.Y.
- William Stewart, 18, of Shandaken, N.Y.
Leitos has been convicted and sentenced to six months in jail; Schlegel and Stewart are awaiting disposition of their cases in court.
The shelter has since received help from the public to make up for the lost funds.
