PleaseRobMe.com warns Twitter users to watch what they say

A new Web site is taking advantage of the law of unintended consequences.

PleaseRobMe.com wrote some code to search Twitter and similar sites. It then lists hundreds of updates every minute whenever someone Tweets about not being home.

It’s worldwide and the Capital Region is by no means excluded.

jimstagnitti send this messages on Thursday: “I'm at Panera Bread (601 Troy Schenectady Rd, Latham).”

TheUnseenShadow wrote “I'm at Warner hall (220 Albany Ave, Cobleskill, NY 12043, Schenectady Ave, Cobleskill).”

Think it’s illegal? Hardly. Twitter’s own privacy policy says this: “Our default is almost always to make the information you provide public.... Your public information is broadly and instantly disseminated.”

The site PleaseRobMe.com has this warning on it’s site: “The danger is publicly telling people where you are. This is because it leaves one place you're definitely not... home.”

The site goes on to say that its intention is not to have homes burglarized.
