Ex-NY senator and son plead not guilty

NEW YORK -- A former New York state senator and his son have pleaded not guilty to new charges in their corruption case.

Pedro Espada Jr. and his son, Pedro G. Espada, entered the pleas Wednesday in federal court in Brooklyn. The revised indictment filed last week accused them of lying about their incomes and profits at their federally funded health care clinic in the Bronx.

The Espadas had already pleaded not guilty to charges they embezzled more than $500,000 from the clinic. Prosecutors say they used the money to pay for expensive meals, concerts and family birthday parties.

Jury selection for the pair's trial is scheduled to begin March 12.
