NY apples now shipping to Indian, Saudi Arabia, Africa
FISHERS -- The people of India can now enjoy New York state apples.
Jim Allen of the New York Apple Association says increasing apple exports to new markets is a top priority of the marketing group.
He said nearly 43,000 bushels of New York apples have been shipped to India since last fall's harvest.
As the second-most populous country in the world, India could end up as an excellent export market for New York apples in future years.
Growers from New York are shipping apples for the first time to other exotic locales as well, like Singapore, Saudi Arabia and Africa.
The state exports nearly one million bushels of apples every year to markets like Canada, the United Kingdom, Israel and Russia. New York ranks second nationally in apple production behind Washington.
