DISCUSS: Who won the presidential debate?
Comments 0 | Recommend 0The second debate between Barack Obama and John McCain focused mainly on the economy.
Obama said the current financial crisis is the "final verdict on the failed economic policies of the last eight years" that President Bush pursued and which were "supported by Senator McCain." McCain countered that Obama would favor raising taxes, thus hurting employment.
The two men criticized each other repeatedly as the topics turned to energy, spending and health care.
The debate was the second of three between the two major party rivals. It was the first time voters posed questions to the two candidates from the audience and the Internet.
The town-hall format at Belmont University allowed voters to ask questions while NBC's Tom Brokaw moderated. The candidates' third and last debate will be Oct. 15 at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.
