Police: Kids Behind The Wheel In Malta
The broken glass and mangled metal are things that can easily be replaced and this time, no one was seriously injured. But Kim Fortune, the owner of what's left of a sporty Chevrolet, says the worst of it is the way it reminds her of the last time state troopers came to her door in the middle of the night. She was five years old when police told her family her sister had been killed in a car crash.
"That was a flashback I didn't need, that's for sure," Fortune told CBS 6 News.
Fortune says she parked her car - locked - outside her apartment in Malta Wednesday night. She says she left the key in a bag inside the car.
According to police the car was not locked when three kids, aged ten, eleven and twelve years got into it after sneaking out of their homes nearby - at least one lives in the Malta Gardens trailer park.
Police say the two girls and a boy found the keys inside the Chevy and drove it around the park, with one girl on the other's lap driving recklessly.
Police say when troopers arrived and turned on their emergency lights at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday, the car accelerated, lurched forward and hit a car parked in a driveway, then crossed the street and smashed into a trailer.
All three kids are expected to appear soon in family court. Charges include grand larceny. Police say all three kids had minor injuries.
