CRIMETRACKER: Safe Guarding Your Self While Shopping

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

The longer your exposed, the longer your in danger.

CRIMETRACKERS takes a closer look at how you can safe guard yourself while shopping this holiday season. Especially considering larcenies, which is the crime that is most likely to happen to you while shopping, accounted for two thirds of all property crimes in 2007, and equaled more than 17 billion dollars in losses. When talking about larcenies, we mean car break-ins, purse snatchings, and shoplifting; any kind of theft big or small. CRIMETRACKERS mapped these crimes in the capital region, during specific time periods over the past three years. We found, although malls are something of a hot spot for larcenies, you are most likely to become a victim of the of the crime in the city of Albany. Regardless, the worst thing you can do in any state or any city is think 'It won't happen to me.'

Perhaps that exact sentiment is nowhere more evident than in your local mall parking lot. We spent a few hours in one and found a series of unlocked car doors, all but inviting a thief to steal your stuff. So when it comes to staying safe, you should lock your car door and hide any valuables in sight. But you know that already. How about the helpful tips that do not come to mind as easily? Such as: Drop Off and Drive. Every time you bring a shopping bag to your car, move it to another lot. That way, if someone has their eye on you, they may think you left for the day. Police say the chance of someone following you is slim, they'll likely move on to their next victim. Also, when moving your car, think close and well lit. The closer you are to the mall's entrance, the less time you have to spend in the parking lot and that's the key! Another good habit to get into is to talk on your cell phone. While you may think it is distracting, Officer Dwyer says it may act as a crime deterrent.

"If something were to happen you have someone on the other end who you can notify immediately. You can tell them where you are and what's going on, " says Dwyer.

When shopping this year, remember to keep your purse closeto your body. Doing otherwise might tempt a thief. Make sure your keys are always out, your hands are always free and you are always aware of your surroundings.

Other tips include, factoring in peak shopping hours into your mall runs. If you can not find a spot, don't chance it. Go home and come back during a slower time.

Also, When you do find a spot. Go the extra mile and take notice of where you parked. Police advise jotting down the parking poll number near your car. Again, minimize the time you spend outside of your car and in the parking lot.
