Bruno resigns CEO position at CMA Consulting
LATHAM -- Joseph Bruno, convicted Monday on two counts of federal corruption, has resigned his CEO position at CMA Consulting Services in Latham, the firm has announced.
The resignation is effective immediately, CMA said Tuesday.
Bruno had accepted the job in July 2008, shortly after he resigned from the state Senate. He took over as the company's chief executive officer, replacing Kay Stafford who in turn transitioned into the role of president and chair of the board of directors.
CMA, an information technology consulting firm, is headquartered in Latham and calls itself one of the largest woman-owned IT firms in the market.
Bruno was convicted by a federal jury Tuesday on two counts of theft of honest services via mail fraud for concealing hundreds of thousands of dollars in payment he received from businessman Jared Abbruzzese.
The jury believed Abbruzzese essentially gifted Bruno with money in exchange for lucrative state grants benefiting one of Abbruzzese's companies, Evident Technologies, and that Bruno attempted to cover up those payments.
Bruno was acquitted on five other counts of corruption. A mistrial was declared on an eighth count.
Bruno vowed Monday to fight the conviction, telling reporters outside the courtroom, "The legal process will continue." A spokesperson later added in a statement the retired senator "will fight long and hard to regain his name and reputation."
